چکیده

INTRODUCTION Mendelian inheritance is based on the transmission of a single gene on a dominant, recessive or X-linked pattern. Discoveries on DNA structure, the genetic code, the genome and the observation that some characters and hereditary diseases do not follow classical mendelian inheritance have led researchers to define other patterns of transmission, referring particularly to multifactorial and mitochondrial inheritance. Multifactorial inheritance is based on the synergy of genes and environmental factors. Extra nuclear mitochondrial heredity can only be transmitted by the mother whose cells contain a number of mitochondria. Several factors can modify the expected individual phenotypes. There will undoubtedly be important advances in our knowledge of the pattern of inheritance of characters and diseases given a better understanding of gene structure and role, interaction of genes between them and with the environment.

Mechanisms of non-Mendelian inheritance in genetic disease.

Single gene disorders with Mendelian inheritance patterns have contributed greatly to the identification of genes and pathways implicated in genetic disease. In these cases, molecular analysis predicts disease status relatively directly. However, there are many abnormalities which show familial recurrence and have a clear genetic component, but do not show regular Mendelian segregation patterns...

Non-Mendelian Single-Nucleotide Polymorphism Inheritance and Atypical Meiotic Configurations are Prevalent in Hop.

Hop ( L.) breeding programs seek to exploit genetic resources for bitter flavor, aroma, and disease resistance. However, these efforts have been thwarted by segregation distortion including female-biased sex ratios. To better understand the transmission genetics of hop, we genotyped 4512 worldwide accessions of hop, including cultivars, landraces, and over 100 wild accessions using a genotyping...

Using Mendelian inheritance to improve high-throughput SNP discovery.

Restriction site-associated DNA sequencing or genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) approaches allow for rapid and cost-effective discovery and genotyping of thousands of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in multiple individuals. However, rigorous quality control practices are needed to avoid high levels of error and bias with these reduced representation methods. We developed a formal statistica...

Pompe practice survey of Canadian (Ontario) rheumatologists

Introduction Pompe disease (glycogenosis II, acid maltase deficiency, OMIM 232300) is a treatable autosomal recessive disorder of glycogen metabolism caused by deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme acid alpha-glucosidase. A hallmark of Pompe disease is the presence of glycogen-loaded lysosomes. Pompe disease has frequently been misdiagnosed as other myopathies, such as polymyositis, and mistakenly...

پزشک و مشاور ژنتیک

Physicians are families' best counsellers, and genetic counseling is one of the most important and delicate aspects of medicine. Genetic disorders are the third most common problems of mankind after infectious diseases and malnutrition. 10% of neonatal and 25% of pediatric mortalities are some how related to congenital and genetic disturbances. Genetic disorders are categorized in four major gr...
